Thwarticus

Chronicles of a time traveler.

Why agriculture is so hard.

WHAT MAKES AGRICULTURE hard, in practice, is that no reward for all of the expended effort is seen near the time the work is being performed. Reward can hardly be counted upon, one thinks, given that it is so far removed from the present moment.

Unlike pouring concrete or painting a house, where reward is quickly felt upon doing the work, the planter cannot know what nature has in mind, and must bolster his faith that working now will produce a bounty later.

Not everyone can do it.
